Controlling Wood Violet

Weed Name:  Wood violet, wild violet

Life Cycle:  Annual (1 year) or Perennial (>2 years)

Identification:  Cupped, heart-shaped leaves with a slight point at the tip.  Usually smooth, borne in clusters from stems coming from a central point.  Flower color usually purple, may be white, pink or yellow.

Biology:  Spreads by seeds, rhizomes or long stolons.  Prefers moist soils, often found in shaded sites.

Management:  Mow regularly to not remove more than 1/3 of grass leaf length at a single mowing, fertilize three to four times each year (late May, early July, early September, and mid to late October)  Many people enjoy the flowers and keep it in the lawn.

Herbicides:  Any lawn herbicide with 2, 4-D or triclopyr as one ingredient.  Apply in autumn or in spring when purple flowers are visible. A second application may be necessary.
